🎧 Crossed Wires Podcast Festival Concludes in Sheffield
Crossed Wires Podcast Festival, the podcasting industry's newest public event, concluded on Sunday, June 2nd, in Sheffield. The festival, held at iconic city venues, attracted podcast enthusiasts and creators to join the industry's top and emerging names.
Crossed Wires showcased live performances and special guests from Friday 31st May to Sunday 2nd June, including free shows from SELF ESTEEM, Greg James and Alice Levine, Brown Girls Do It Too, and others.
The Background:
Founded by some of the most respected names in British podcasting and live events; Co-host of My Dad Wrote A Porno and British Scandal, Alice Levine, Founder of Persephonica (Dua Lipa's At Your Service, Political Currency), Dino Sofos and Co-founder of Tramlines and Day Fever James O'Hara. Supported by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and Sheffield City Council, the festival firmly positioned Sheffield as a hub for the ever-growing podcasting community.
The Highlight :
The musician SELF ESTEEM discussed her upcoming album, ambitions to work with Richard Hawley, and her desire to be like Chris Martin. SELF ESTEEM performed her single "I Do This All the Time" and also shared details about her upcoming book during the event. Katie Price performed her podcast, The Katie Price Show, alongside her sister and co-host, Sophie. Tom Davis and Romesh Ranganathan created an unfiltered chat atmosphere during Wolf and Owl Live.
In a separate event, Katherine Ryan performed her podcast Telling Everybody Everything. John Robins and Elis James gave a hilarious live version of their podcast, while TalkArt with Russell Tovey and Robert Diament discussed the idea of masculinity. Uncanny: I Know What I Saw showcased chilling storytelling at the Lyceum Theatre. In a different setting, Brown Girls Do It Too's Poppy Jay and Rubina Pabani brought their podcast line-up to life with skits addressing taboo topics.
Why is this matter :
These live podcast events offered listeners an exclusive opportunity to interact with their favorite hosts and content in a relaxed setting, promoting a stronger sense of community among attendees. The variety of subjects covered by these podcasts also helped to question accepted wisdom and start important discussions. With its distinctive combination of grassroots creativity and celebrity impact, Crossed Wires has set a new standard for podcast festivals and anticipates coming back next year with even more surprises and innovative programming.
Our Take:
By pushing boundaries and sparking crucial conversations, Crossed Wires has definitively carved out a unique position in the podcasting industry. Their unique live event format distinguishes them from conventional podcasts and draws in repeat listeners.
🎙️iHeartMedia's Failure to Address Pay Gaps Threatens to Drive Away Top Talent
The writers' union of iHeartPodcasts is considering leaving the largest podcast studio in America due to stalled contract negotiations, with iHeartMedia yet to finalize an agreement.
The Background
The 110-member iHeart Podcast Union has been trying to use flyers to tell coworkers about their rights as unionised workers and the ongoing bargaining process since they started organising in 2021 and were voluntarily recognised in 2022.
The Revelation
This group is requesting higher income, extended parental leave, and enhanced health benefits. Despite the company's success, pay gaps and unclear work environments persist for podcast producers. They are worried about the lack of initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion, fair management practices, and clear labor divisions.
The market for scripted audio and podcasts offers higher pay than iHeartMedia. To tackle these issues, the creators are seeking fair compensation, benefits, diversity and inclusion accountability, manageable workloads, clear advancement paths, and job security. To ensure sustainable growth and industry leadership, they expect the iHeart leadership to recognize their union and work towards these goals.
Why does this matter?
Resolving these issues will not only benefit creators but also improve iHeartMedia's reputation and overall workplace culture, emphasizing the need to respect and support creators in their work. Resolving these issues will help attract and retain top talent, leading to long-term success for the company.
Our Take:
By prioritizing their creators' needs and well-being, iHeartMedia can establish a reputation as a company that values its employees and fosters a positive work environment. Not only will this help the individuals concerned, but it will also boost the company's overall performance and standing in the market.

🚨Precise Targets: Podcast Advertising Market Projects 14.30% Growth by 2028
Rising listener engagement and investment in diverse content will boost podcasting to USD 10.77 billion by 2023. Podcasts are popular for education and multitasking. Internet penetration, Bluetooth speakers, tablets, smartphones, and computers affect the market.
The podcast advertising market has survived COVID-19 thanks to audience growth and technological advances. Podcasters are loyal and engaged, making them more receptive to advertising. Ad campaigns are more effective with precise ad placement thanks to advanced insertion and targeting technology.
The Background
Polaris Market Research published the research in January 2024 based on data from 2019 to 2022 and forecasts from 2023 to 2028.
The Revelation
The podcast advertising market, worth USD 10.77 billion in 2023, is projected to grow 14.30%. Podcasts' diversity attracts advertisers who can target specific demographics and interests. Brand-podcast creator partnerships offer unique advertising opportunities. Podcast advertising relies on robust analytics and measurement tools to track reach, engagement, and conversion rates.
Podcast advertising is growing in terms of ad type, genre, industry, and region, showing a diverse expansion across various segments. Podcast advertising was most popular in the U.S., Canada, and Europe in 2022. Host-read ads dominated the market in the U.S. and Canada. Because of their authenticity and seamless integration into the podcast's narrative, these ads are effective. Podcast hosts personally deliver them.
News and politics were the largest segment in 2022 due to their active engagement, informed content, which attracted advertisers seeking engaged audiences. In 2022, the BFSI segment generated the most revenue, serving a diverse audience of financial professionals. Podcast advertising can reach the target audience and comply with industry regulations.
In 2022, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeartMedia, Podtrac, and Stitcher led the podcast market in North America, giving advertisers access to large and engaged audiences. Local platforms like JioSaavn in India, KKBOX in Taiwan, and Ximalaya FM in China will drive growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Spotify and Apple Podcasts also have a large presence in the region, giving advertisers a broad reach.
