This week's insight honors Women's History Month by focusing on the history-making female podcast hosts as well as the podcast listeners among American women today.
In the past week, 27% of American women aged 12 and older have listened to a podcast, according to The Infinite Dial 2023. The Top 10 Podcasts in the United States are listed below, ranked by the number of women who listen to them each week according to Edison Podcast Metrics' Q4 2023 data.
The podcast with the largest weekly reach of women weekly podcast listeners age 13+ in the U.S. is the true crime podcast Crime Junkie hosted by Ashley Flowers with Brit Prawat, and launched in December of 2017. Crime Junkie consistently ranks at the top of the podcast charts quarter after quarter, and currently sits at the #2 spot among all weekly podcast listeners in the U.S. The Joe Rogan Experience, the top podcast in the U.S. overall, is #2 among U.S. women, and true crime pod Dateline NBC ranks #3.
In the United States, Edison Podcast Metrics is the only service that can tell you how big your audience is compared to other podcasts and networks. This includes networks and shows that haven't chosen to be ranked by other companies in the same industry.
The Daily with Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise, Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, Morbid with Alaina Urquhart and Ash Kelley, and My Favourite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are five of the top ten podcasts. All of them have women as hosts. On the true crime pod, Andrea Canning, who has worked on Dateline NBC for 20 years, is one of the reporters. Our most recent list of the Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. for Q4 2023 shows that all of these shows have a huge following with podcast listeners in general.
Four of the top ten podcasts for women in the U.S. are true crime shows, and three of those shows are hosted by women.
It might not seem like a natural choice for the women's top 10, but the show New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, which is about sports and is hosted by NFL players, made it there thanks in large part to the support of Taylor Swift's mostly female fans, who call themselves "Swifties." Our data shows that the "Taylor Swift effect" led to a huge rise in listeners and a shift towards women. In a genre like sports where men usually dominate, like this one, women can have a big impact on the future of podcasts.
Women have a lot of power in the podcasting industry, both as creators and as active listeners who get people interested in all kinds of content. [ Source ]
